In its final tune-up of the regular season, the San Diego State men's golf team shot an 11-over-par 291 on Sunday to finish alone in seventh place at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. Despite shaving seven strokes off their second-round score, the Aztecs slipped one notch after posting a collective 34-over 874 at the 6,742-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course.
Freshman Matt Hoffenberg was SDSU's top finisher for the second tournament in a row, firing a final-round 71 to tie for the 13th spot with a combined 3-over 213. The Simi Valley, Calif., native began the day in a tie for sixth, but was unable to keep pace as the leaders took advantage of the subsiding windy conditions that hampered Saturday's play. Despite the stumble, Hoffenberg still posted his eighth consecutive top-20 performance in as many outings this spring.
Fellow classmate Johan Carlsson equaled Hoffenberg's effort with a 71 of his own to finish in a tie for 35th at 11-over 221. The Gothenburg, Sweden, product was able to offset six bogeys with a team-leading five birdies over the final 18 holes to move up eight places in the standings.
The Aztecs' third-best score of the day belonged to junior David Palm (Landvetter, Sweden), who fired a 73 during the final round to tie for 32nd at 10-over 220. After a shaky start, Palm settled down and played bogey-free golf on the back nine, including a birdie on the par-5 16th.
The day was not kind to senior Chad Moscovic, however, as the Stockton, Calif., native dropped 14 spots to tie Carlsson for the 35th position at 11-over 221 after posting a final-round 76. Meanwhile, fellow classmate Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) carded an identical 76 en route to an 18-over 228. The La Costa Canyon High alumnus was unable to overcome a dreary second round and finished in a tie for 58th.
USC (-12, 828), which led the tournament wire-to-wire, bested host school Stanford (+1, 841) by 13 strokes to walk away with the team title, while the Trojans' Rory Hie (-10) was a decisive eight-shot victor over three other players for medalist honors.
San Diego State begins postseason play later this week when it competes in the MWC Championships, April 24-26, in Tucson, Ariz., on the 7,136-yard, par-71 Catalina Course at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa.
