2008 MWC Championship Final Results in PDF Format
The San Diego State women's golf team posted its best round of the tournament by 11 strokes, but came up just short in its bid to move up in the final standings, finishing seventh with a 93-over 969 at the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs fired a 23-over 315 in the final 18 holes to draw them to within just one stroke of sixth place Wyoming, which posted a three-day total of 92-over 968 at the par-73, 6,167-yard University of New Mexico Championship Course.
SDSU junior Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.) jumped 10 slots on the final individual leaderboard with a team tournament best even-par 73, including four birdies over a five-hole span. Kazarian began the day in 34th place and jumped all the way into a tie for 24th at 22-over 241. The co-captain's final round score was her best of the week by a whopping 10 strokes and tied as the second-best on Saturday in the entire 35-player field.
Freshman Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) maintained her spot in the final individual standings, tying for 24th place along with Kazarian with a 54-hole score of 241, including a final round 7-over 80. Junior Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) was at 1-over after the first nine holes of the day, but hit a rough spot on the 13th through 17th holes with three bogeys and two double bogeys to card an 81. Kamimura tied for 28th place overall with a 23-over 242.
Freshman Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) recorded her best effort of the championships with an 81 to place 33rd with a 248, while redshirt sophomore Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) ended up 34th with a 253 at the 54-hole event. Both Arcala, Cole and Roberts were all making their first career MWC tournament appearance in a field that included four squads ranked in the national top 50.
Host New Mexico claimed its fifth MWC women's golf title with a final round 299 and a 54-hole total of 888, cruising to an easy 19-stroke victory over second place BYU, which posted a 31-over 907. Lobo Jodi Ewart rallied to claim her second consecutive individual championship with a final round 72 to win by two strokes over teammate Morgan Grantham and BYU's Natalia Jimenez. Ewart was at even par for the event (219) and became the first MWC golfer to claim back-to-back individual medalist honors.
