STANFORD, Calif. -
San Diego State's Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) carded a 2-over-par 142 on Saturday to lead the Aztec men's golf team during the first two rounds of the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. As a team, SDSU shot a combined 23-over 583 on rounds of 285 and 298 to finish the day in sixth place at the 6,742-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course. USC (-6) raced to a commanding lead over tournament host Stanford (+12), while UCLA (+14), California (+17) and UC Irvine (+21) rounded out the top five.
Hoffenberg came out strong, firing a 2-under 68 over the first 18 holes, but had his momentum derailed by five bogeys during the afternoon session to close with a 74. Still, the Aztec freshman remains in contention for a top-five finish after ending the day in a four-way tie for the sixth spot. USC's Rory Hie shot a torrid opening-round 62 en route to a 7-under 133 to take control of the individual leaderboard by six strokes over fellow Trojan teammate Tom Glissmeyer (-1).
Meanwhile, senior Chad Moscovic completed Saturday's action in a tie for the 21st position after carding a 5-over 145. Like Hoffenberg, Moscovic was unable to duplicate his early success, settling for a 75 after opening with a solid even-par 70. Despite the stumble, the Stockton, Calif., product sits just two strokes out the top 10 heading into Sunday's final round.
Junior David Palm finds himself two shots in back of Moscovic after posting a 7-over 147 to tie for 28th. The Landvetter, Sweden, native drained four birdies in the morning, but was hampered by three bogeys and two double-bogeys en route to an opening-round 73 before finishing with a 74. Fellow countryman Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) posted a pair of 75s to end the day in a tie for 43rd at 10-over 150. The SDSU freshman completed the afternoon round on a positive note by notching an eagle and a birdie on his final two holes.
Rounding out the Aztec delegation was senior Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.), who experienced difficulty over the second 18 holes, carding an atypical 78 en route to a two-round total of 12-over 152 to tie for 56th.
Final-round action at the U.S. Intercollegiate gets underway on Sunday with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. A live scoring link will be provided on the home page of GoAztecs.com.
