AZUSA, Calif. - San Diego State juniors Kristin Olafsdottir and Shana Watson both provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon at the Mt. SAC Relays contested at Azusa Pacific University. Olafsdottir finished in ninth place with 5,235 points, while Watson came in 12th after earning a personal-record 5,056 points.
After completing the first four events on Wednesday, the field began the final day with the long jump where Watson leaped 19 feet, 6.25 inches to place fourth overall and first among all collegians. Olafsdottir, meanwhile, posted the 12th-best effort with a season-best jump of 18-1.00.
Following the long jump, the heptathlon moved to the javelin throw where both Aztecs established new personal records. Watson recorded a throw of 123-5, while Olafsdottir logged a distance of 118-9.
In the seventh and final competition, the 800-meter run, Olafsdottir made one last push to enter the top 10 and she did not disappoint. The junior ran a season-best 2 minutes, 16.16 seconds to finish in second place. Watson, meanwhile, completed her first heptathlon of the year by clocking in with an outdoor personal-best time of 2:35.39.
Among collegiate competition only, Olafsdottir finished in fifth and Watson came in seventh. Great Britain's Julie Hollman won the event with 5,766 points and Anett Wichmann of Hawai'i was the top collegian after totaling 5,521 points.
