The No. 18/21 San Diego State softball team fell to Brigham Young, 2-0, in eight innings Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs dropped to 30-12 and 3-2 in Mountain West Conference play with the loss, while the Cougars improved to 28-14 and 5-2.

The game was full of missed opportunities for SDSU, which left nine runners on base in the game, including bases loaded in the bottom of the first and seventh innings.

In that crucial seventh, freshman Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) drew a one out walk and moved up a base on a bunt single by freshman Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.). Camello and Wisneski followed with a double steal to put runners on second and third with one out. After sophomore Brittany Knudsen (San Diego, Calif./Escondido HS) reached on a throwing error by the Cougars' catcher Emi Willing to load the bases, senior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) hit a hard shot to Kristin Delahoussaye at second base which originally looked like trouble. Delahoussaye, however, fielded the ball and threw a strike to Willing to get Camello at the plate. Junior Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) followed with a grounder to Brigham Young third baseman Angeline Quiocho who tossed it to first to beat McCorkle by a hair, ending the San Diego State threat.

Brigham Young answered with a two-run eighth. The Cougars' runs came when Amanda Vance hit a one-out triple to score Cashjen Davis from first. Whitney Nix then replaced Vance at third and scored on the ensuing groundout by Daniela Snow, giving Brigham Young the 2-0 victory.

Junior Erin Floros (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel HS) broke through for two hits for the Aztecs, who outhit the Cougars, 6-5, while Knudsen and McCorkle each singled and walked.

Senior Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) (19-9) was the tough luck loser after allowing two runs on five hits - three infield singles, a single to left and a triple - over eight innings of work. She struck out seven with no walks.

Ross' counterpart, Paige Affleck of Brigham Young, was just as effective. Affleck struck out 11 SDSU players and gave up six hits and three walks in eight innings.

San Diego State will look for revenge when it takes on the Cougars at 1 p.m. Saturday.
