SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team (8-12, 1-5 MWC) snapped a five-match losing streak and picked up its first Mountain West Conference victory with a convincing 7-0 sweep over Air Force at Aztec Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
Despite three newly formed partnerships, SDSU wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. Kathryn Kitts and Esther Cadua made quick work of Erika Shortridge and Sam Sarkis in an 8-2 victory at No. 3. Eliska Krausova and Julia Trunk then clinched the point for the Aztecs as they defeated Christine Abayan and Erlyn Rudico by an identical score at the top of the ladder.
In the final doubles match, Sisse Nielsen and Milana Yusupov were trailing 4-3 before going on a 5-0 run to put away Lauren Wilson and Christine Monreal and complete the sweep for the Scarlet and Black.
SDSU carried its momentum into singles play, finishing the day without dropping a set. First off the courts was Trunk who handed Wilson a 6-0, 6-1 loss at the No. 2 position. Krausova saw similar fortunes as she downed Sarkis by the same count. Cadua then clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Katrina Eromin on court four. With the win, Cadua improved to 5-1 in league action and now has a team-leading 20 overall victories.
Holly Bagshaw found her way back into the win column by disposing of Abayan, 6-0, 6-1, while Yusupov and Nielsen rounded out the Aztec winners.
San Diego State will continue its Mountain West Conference weekend tomorrow (April 12) with a 10 a.m. PDT dual match against Wyoming.
