PROVO, Utah - The San Diego State women's tennis team (7-9 overall; 0-2 MWC) dropped its second Mountain West Conference match of the weekend, falling to No. 47 Brigham Young (10-8; 2-0 MWC), 4-1, Saturday morning at the BYU Indoor Tennis Complex. The Cougars won the doubles point and went on to clinch the match at the top of the singles ladder.
In doubles play, BYU took a 1-0 advantage when Elle Carney and Chie Hayasaka defeated Milana Yusupov and Esther Cadua on court three. At the top of the ladder, Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen had the daunting task of facing the 19th-ranked duo of Jennifer Miccoli and Anastasia Surkova. The Aztec tandem put up a fight, but ended up on the short end of an 8-4 score, as the Cougars clinched the point.
Despite holding an early 3-1 lead in their match, Kathryn Kitts and Julia Trunk ended up falling to No. 60 Dolly Chang/Kristina Doerr, completing the doubles sweep for BYU.
With singles play underway, the Cougars went up 3-0 as Krausova was handed a straight-set loss at the hands of Hayasaka before Trunk fell to No. 80 Doerr on court two. Cadua kept the Aztecs alive by downing Chang, 6-3, 6-3, for her fifth consecutive and team-leading 17th overall victory. BYU went on to win the match, however, with No. 86 Surkova outlasting Holly Bagshaw, 7-6, 6-4, at the top spot.
San Diego State will return to the courts next weekend when it heads to Las Vegas, Nev., for three MWC matches. The Aztecs will take on New Mexico on Friday (April 4), before a Saturday showdown with TCU. SDSU will close out the weekend by tangling with host UNLV on Sunday, April 6. First serve for all matches is set for 10 a.m. (PDT).
