LAKESIDE, Calif. - San Diego State junior David Palm fired a 6-under-par 138 on Monday to lead the Aztec men's golf team during the first two rounds of the seventh annual Barona Collegiate Cup at the 7,393-yard, par-72 Barona Creek Club. Palm's effort included a 4-under 67 over the second 18 holes, which vaulted him into a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard. As a team, SDSU shot a combined 2-under 574 on rounds of 288 and 286 to finish the day in a tie for third place along with SMU, while Texas A&M (-20) and San Diego (-4) hold down the top two spots.

On chilly day in which the opening tee times were delayed by the presence of frost on the course, Palm got things heated up with his putter, sinking 11 birdies overall, including six over a seven-hole stretch during the afternoon session. With his 67, the Landvetter, Sweden, native tied for the low round of the day, which propelled him into a share of the lead along with the first-place Aggies' Andrea Pavan and Nacho Elvira.

Senior Aaron Goldberg sits four shots off the pace in a seven-way tie for ninth place after shooting a combined 4-under 140. The Encinitas, Calif., product was initially tied for the sixth spot on the strength of an opening-round 2-under 70, but was unable to gain any ground after posting an even-par 72 during the afternoon.

Five strokes in back of Goldberg was freshman Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), who walked off the course in a tie for 29th after firing a 3-over 147 for the day on rounds of 74-73. After tying for first at Lexus Classic last week, fellow classmate Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) ran into difficulty on Monday, carding a 6-over 150 over the first two rounds to finish in a tie for 43rd. Meanwhile, senior Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) shot a second-round 74, which counted towards SDSU's team score, en route to a 7-over 151 to toe for 47th.

The Barona Collegiate Cup resumes on Tuesday with final-round action as the Aztecs are scheduled to tee off with golfers from Oklahoma State and Wichita State on the No. 1 hole beginning at 7:30 a.m. PDT.
