SAN DIEGO - Captains' outlook

"We started our spring racing season on March 1 against Loyola Marymount and UC Irvine at the Parker Cup Regatta. As usual, the day started before the crack of dawn and we traveled up to Newport Beach.
We had a strong showing at the race, taking first in all of the events we entered. (The result) was a great confidence boost for our entire team. We have really come together as a varsity and novice squad. This is also a great indicator that our team has potential and that the loss of 12 seniors from last year has not set us back. We have very young but strong varsity boats, which is refreshing because we're eager to learn and improve.
This weekend we're heading up to Marina Del Rey for a dual (meet) with UCLA. This will be a good opportunity for us to race against a nationally ranked program and we're excited to see how the weekend will go.
The racing will be tough but with well-executed race plans we will hopefully still accomplish our goals. Although the Bruins are not in our conference, it's beneficial for both programs to see where we stand and what we can improve on at this point in the season. Even with the Aztec victory in Newport we know we have a lot of work to do to place at the WIRA Championships in May. For now we're working hard on and off the water, getting excited for our racing season to take off.
