SAN DIEGO - The 56th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team opened a three-match homestand in style on Thursday with a 7-0 blanking of Cal Poly at Aztec Tennis Center. After gutting out the early doubles point, SDSU (6-5) swept through singles play to secure its third shutout of season, while the Mustangs (7-6) dropped their third straight decision.

The Aztecs received an early jolt in doubles competition when Andre Feliz and Matan Shitrit suffered an 8-5 setback at the hands of Andrew Gerst and Alexander Sonesson, 8-5, at the No. 2 position. However, Achim Ceban and Tim Schulz van Endert got SDSU back on course after outlasting Blake Wardman and Drew Jacobs by a 9-7 count in the third spot. Shortly thereafter, Bartosz Golas and Juan Gomez dispatched Robert Foy and Darryn Young by the same 9-7 margin in another tight battle on the No. 1 court, which gave the Scarlet and Black a 1-0 lead.

After a close shave in doubles, the Aztecs were all business in singles competition, taking four of six encounters in straight sets. Feliz was the first player to finish after recording his team-leading 10th victory in a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Sonesson in the sixth position. Over on the No. 1 court, Golas overcame a pesky Gerst in the first set to win going away, 6-4, 6-1. The Scarlet and Black then sewed up the match when Gomez pinned a 6-2, 6-1 defeat on Jacobs in the No. 3 slot.

With the requisite four points achieved for the team victory, the Aztecs tacked on three additional wins to account for the final score. At No. 4, Ceban prevailed by a 6-4, 6-2 count over Foy, while Danny Heidecker won for the fifth time in his last six outings by disposing of Wardman, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the No. 5 position. Shitrit was also extended to three sets in his clash with Young at No. 2 , but pulled away for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 triumph in the final match of the day.

San Diego State swings back into action on Sunday, March 16, when Yale visits Aztec Tennis center for a noon showdown.
