STANFORD, Calif. - Six different Aztecs were able to find the back of the net against No. 2 Stanford, but it wasn't enough as the seventh-ranked San Diego State women's water polo team dropped its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener, 12-9, Saturday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center. The Scarlet and Black fell to 13-2 overall and 0-1 in the MPSF, while the Cardinal improved to 10-2 overall, 2-0 MPSF.
Jenna Schuster led the Aztec attack with her fifth hat trick of the season. Ronni Gautschi added a pair of goals, while Tiphanie Elliott, Erin Lester, Becca Ur and Anna Gonzales all scored once. Heather Fenske had seven saves in goal.
Jacquelyn Gauthier and Lauren Silver each scored three goals to pace the Stanford offense.
The Cardinal notched three tallies in each period, and jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. The Aztecs matched Stanford in the second frame to pull within two goals (6-4) at intermission, but the home team was able to hold on in the second half to claim the 12-9 victory.
San Diego State will continue MPSF play, Sunday, March 2, as it heads to San Jose State for a noon PT game.
