San Diego State Goes for 20th Win and Momentum Boost in Regular-Season Finale at Air Force on Saturday Afternoon
San Diego State (19-10 overall; 9-6 MWC) looks to reach the 20-win plateau for the third consecutive season for the first time since Franklin Roosevelt, was in the White House and extend the school record of consecutive conference campaigns with double-digit victories to three on Saturday afternoon, when the Aztecs play at Air Force (15-13; 7-8 MWC).
Game time is set for 1 p.m. MT (noon PT) and the contest will be televised by The Mtn. (Cox Cable channel 320). The game can also be heard on the Aztec flagship, AM 600 KOGO.
San Diego State had won 20 games in a season just three times in its first 36 seasons as a Division I program, but ninth-year head coach Steve Fisher is on the cusp of leading the Aztecs to that magical mark for a third consecutive season - something that has not been accomplished on The Mesa since the 1938-39, 1939-40 and 1940-41 campaigns.
The 20-win mark has proven important in the nine-year history of the Mountain West Conference, as in the first eight seasons of the league, the 25 teams that have won at least 20 games have all advanced to postseason play.
San Diego State which advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and the NIT in 2007, is looking for a third consecutive postseason berth for the first time since 1940, 1941 and 1942.
The Aztecs are also looking for league win No. 10, and extend a streak of double-digit conference-win seasons to three. Prior to the current stretch, SDSU had won 10 or more league games in a season just five times in 85 seasons. In addition, San Diego State is looking to join UNLV and Brigham Young as the only league schools to win at least 10 conference games each of the last three seasons.
San Diego State is coming off an impressive 86-62 victory over Colorado State last Saturday at Cox Arena. The Aztecs, who never trailed in the game and enjoyed a 17-point halftime lead, were led by junior center Ryan Amoroso's 23 points and eight rebounds. Freshman forward Billy White added 16 points and seven rebounds and junior forward Lorrenzo Wade, coming off the bench due to a case of the flu, contributed eight points, eight rebounds and a career-high 11 assists. He became just the 22nd player in school history to record a double-digit assist game. The Aztecs shot 56.7 percent from the floor and owned a 38-24 rebound advantage in the game.
Air Force has been a juggernaut at home, winning 67 of its last 74 games at Clune Arena and have a current four-game winning streak over the Aztecs in the venue. Since SDSU's last win in Clune Arena on Jan. 11, 2003, the Aztecs have won three times each at New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State, twice at UNLV and TCU and one time at Brigham Young and Utah.
