Junior Erin Floros (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel HS) hit a three-run homer in a five-run fifth inning to lead the San Diego State softball team to a 8-2 victory over UC Davis Saturday night in the second day of the Cathedral City Kickoff in Cathedral City, Calif. The win came after the Aztecs (3-1) lost for the first time this season, an 8-0 setback to undefeated Mississippi State.

In the first game, SDSU put the first six runs on the scoreboard thanks to timely hitting, hustle and a host of Aggie errors. In the first inning, freshman Taylor Sutton (Gilroy, Calif.) walked and moved to second on a groundout by junior transfer Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.). Senior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) then beat out an infield single and, at the same time, Sutton rounded third and beat the throw home to give San Diego State the early lead.

Freshman Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) (single) and Jessica Camello (fielder's choice) got things going in the fifth when they each scored on a pair of UC Davis errors. Later in the inning after Sutton and sophomore Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) reached on walks, Floros took a 3-1 pitch and drilled it over the left-field fence to put SDSU up, 6-0.

The Aggies rallied with two runs on the bottom half of the inning when Michelle Espiritu's two-out double scored Deanna Menapace and Trish Paine.

SDSU, however, added two more insurance runs in the seventh off a pair of singles by Floros and sophomore Katy Erickson (Tustin, Calif.).

Floros finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and Wisneski added two hits to pace the offense, while Sutton scored two runs.

Freshman Brooke Petty (San Diego, Calif./Vista HS) improved to 2-0 after scattering two runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings. She struck out five and gave up one walk.

In the earlier game, Mississippi State (4-0) took advantage of two Aztec errors en route to an eight-run sixth inning and 8-0 victory.

The game had been scoreless with SDSU having the majority of good chances. San Diego State loaded the bases in the first with one out but were unable do get across a run after senior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) popped out to the Bulldog shortstop and Knudsen flied out to left field.

In the fifth, sophomore Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) and McCorkle each hit one-out singles to put pressure on the Mississippi State defense. Wells, however, hit a hard lined shot to third where Jessie Bailey quickly tossed the ball to first to double up McCorkle, ending the Aztec threat.

After not getting more than one runner on base through the first five innings, the Bulldogs put eight runs in the sixth on six hits, one walk and two SDSU errors.

Floros and McCorkle had two hits apiece to lead San Diego State. Sophomore Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) recorded the first hit of her career with an infield single in the third.

San Diego State will wrap up its play in the Cathedral City Classic Sunday with a game against Portland State at 11:30 a.m.
