NAMPA, Idaho - The San Diego State track and field squad enjoyed a solid first day at the Bronco Invitational in Nampa, Idaho. Eight Aztecs established personal records, highlighted by junior Decontee Kaye's school-record leap of 20 feet, 2.25 inches in the long jump.
For the second straight week, Kaye set a personal best in the long jump. One week after jumping 19-0.00 at the Mountain T's Invitational, the Hayward, Calif., native bettered her mark by 1-2.25 to surpass former SDSU record holder Lisa Domico's 19-10.25 set in 1999. With her effort, Kaye provisionally qualified for the event after doing the same in the triple jump a week ago.
Overall, it was a great day for the Aztecs in the long jump as Karoline Koehler set a lifetime best with a performance of 19-11.00, which would have been a school record if not for Kaye's showing. Koehler just missed qualifying provisionally for nationals by three centimeters. Shana Watson and Kai Wheeler also put forth personal-best showings as Watson jumped 19-5.75 and Wheeler 19-2.50. Between Kaye (1st), Koehler (2nd), Watson (4th) and Wheeler (5th), the quartet owns four of the top five indoor long jumps in school history.
In the 60-meter dash, San Diego State had four of the eight competitors in the final with Karoline Koehler leading the way with a time of 7.58 to finish in the third place. Sherraine Pencil followed her senior teammate in fifth place with a personal-record mark of 7.60, while Alicia Lowery finished with a lifetime indoor best time of 7.78. Kaye completed the Aztec contingent with a time of 7.83.
In the weight throw, Andrea Martinez erased her personal record of 49-10.00 set last week at the Mountain T's with her 50-3.50 performance in Idaho. Fellow newcomer Kristin Glen experienced similar results in the 5,000-meter run as she established a school and personal record after crossing the finish line in 18:42.37. It was just the second time overall and first time indoors that Glen has competed in the event.
San Diego State will continue competition tomorrow at the Bronco Invite beginning at 10 a.m. MT.
