COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State currently sits in a tie for second place at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships after one day of competition at the Air Force Academy. Kristin Olafsdottir and Shana Watson competed in the pentathlon, the only event of the day, and finished in third and fifth, respectively, earning the Aztecs 10 team points.
For the third consecutive year, Olafsdottir finished in third place with an NCAA provisional-qualifying total of 3,777 points after she set season bests in four events. The junior began the day by running a campaign-best 8.75 in the 60-meter hurdles where she logged the third-fastest time in the field. After clearing 5 feet, 2.50 inches, in the high jump, Olafsdottir finished the pentathlon on a strong note with three straight 2008-best efforts.
In the shot put, Olafsdottir earned 589 points after throwing 35-9.50 and followed it with a long jump of 18-0.25. To put the final touches on a long day, Olafsdottir ran the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 21.47 seconds, and finished second to TCU's Meaghan Peoples (2:18.47).
Watson, a junior, totaled 3,595 points in her first pentathlon of her Aztec career. The Oakland, Calif., native's fifth-place point total ranks as the fourth-best performance in San Diego State history and comes on a day where she established three personal records and two season bests.
In the 60 hurdles, Watson matched her fastest time of the 2008 indoor season with a mark of 9.21 seconds. Later in the high jump, Watson cleared 5-1.25 to post the first of three personal records and then followed it with a PR-distance of 37-1.00 in the shot put. Her effort in the shot put was rather impressive considering it ranks as the ninth-best in school history and was the first time she had ever competed in the event.
Watson carried the momentum gained in the previous two events into the long jump where she recorded the top performance with an indoor PR leap of 19-7.00. It was the fourth-best in school history and it outdistanced second place by 9.25 inches. In final competition of the day, Watson ran in the 800 and crossed the finish line in a season-low 2:39.05.
Conference-meet action continues tomorrow at the Cadet Field House beginning at 1 p.m. MT.
