Two Aztec Starters Return Home as SDSU Puts Two-Game Winning Streak on the Line Against UNLV in Sin City
Owners of a modest two-game winning streak and just days removed from snapping Brigham Young's nine-game winning streak, San Diego State (18-9 overall; 8-5 Mountain West Conference) looks to continue to build momentum toward next month's MWC Championships when the Aztecs travel to the Thomas & Mack Center, the home of the league championships, for a date with UNLV (20-6; 9-3 MWC) on Tuesday night.
Tip time is set for 7:05 p.m. PT and the contest will be televised nationally by CSTV (San Diego Cox Cable channel 321, San Diego/North County Time Warner channel 415, DirecTV channel 610, and Dish Network channel 152). The game can also be heard on AM 600 KOGO.
The Aztecs continued their pursuit of a third straight 20-win season, something that has not been accomplished on The Mesa since the 1938-39, 1939-40 and 1940-41 seasons, on Saturday night with a 69-65 victory over Brigham Young at Cox Arena.
The Aztecs shot just 2-of-12 from three-point range, while the Cougars connected on 10-of-23 treys, but SDSU shot 30 free throws and had just 10 turnovers to defeat Brigham Young at home for the fifth consecutive season. San Diego State trailed by as many as seven points in the second half and was down 59-53 with 6:47 to play, but used a 12-2 run to take the lead for good. Junior center Ryan Amoroso scored five consecutive points during the run.
A pair of Las Vegas natives led the way for the Aztecs. Junior forward Lorrenzo Wade continued his sensational junior season with a career-high 28 points (10-of-16 shooting) and six rebounds. Freshman forward Billy White scored 15 points and added a game-high eight rebounds, career-high tying four blocked shots, three steals and two assists. On Monday, White earned MWC Player of the Week honors to become the first freshman in league history to earn the honor twice.
Tuesday marks the 43rd meeting between the teams, with UNLV owning a 30-12 series advantage. Despite the lopsided overall series, the Aztecs have held more than their own of late, winning four of the last six encounters between the teams. SDSU is just 4-17 lifetime against the Rebels at the Thomas & Mack Center, with wins coming in 1979, 2002 (MWC tournament final), 2005 and 2006. Earlier this season, the Rebels shot 50 percent from the field and made 10-of-21 three-point attempts en route to a 72-69 victory over San Diego State at Cox Arena. Curtis Terry connected on a deep three-point field goal from the left wing off of a curl screen to provide the difference in the game.
Following the game, SDSU returns home for its regular-season home finale when the Aztecs play host to Colorado State on Saturday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PT.
