COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State freshman forward Billy White earned Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honors, the league announced Monday, becoming the first freshman in the nine-year history of the league to earn the honor twice.
A native of Las Vegas, White averaged 17.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocked shots in SDSU victories at Wyoming (79-68) and over conference-leading Brigham Young (69-65). White connected on 73.7 percent (14-of-19) of his attempts from the field in the two games, and posted game-high rebound totals in both contests.
At Wyoming, White sparked San Diego State's second-half comeback by scoring 17 points and adding eight rebounds in the second half. For the game, the freshman had 19 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to post his second double-double of the season.
In the contest against Brigham Young, White had 15 points and recorded game-highs with eight rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals to help the Aztecs snap the Cougars' nine-game winning streak. He was 7-for-11 from the field in the game.
White earned conference player of the week honors earlier this season on Dec. 31, after he hit the game-tying shot to force overtime and the game-winning shot in the extra session to lift the Aztecs to a 79-78 victory over previously unbeaten Sam Houston State.
In addition to White's two honors, fellow Las Vegas native Lorrenzo Wade also won the award on Jan. 21, following SDSU wins over Utah and Wyoming, as did Kyle Spain on Nov. 12.
