SAN DIEGO - The 50th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team got back into the win column on Saturday with a 6-1 triumph over the University of Hawai'i (0-5). The Aztecs captured the doubles point before claiming five-of-six singles matches to improve to 5-4 on the season.
UH won the first doubles match as Sophie Kobuch and Chloe Bihag defeated Sisse Nielsen and Kathryn Kitts at the No. 1 spot. The Aztecs were able to rebound, however, as the SDSU duo of Holly Bagshaw and Eliska Krausova defeated Natasha Zorec and Julia Sandborn, 8-2, before Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov clinched the doubles point for the Scarlet and Black by pinning an 8-4 defeat on Jennifer Goldman and Brittany Beswick.
SDSU carried its momentum into singles play, as Olivia Colman was the first off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Beswick at the No. 6 position. Krausova then put the Aztecs up 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sandborn on court two before Cadua clinched the match by defeating Bihag, 7-6(4), 6-0.
Yusupov and Nielsen rounded out the Aztec winners as they both came from behind to defeat their UH adversaries. At the No. 4 spot, Yusupov fought back after dropping the first set to claim a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Zorec, while Nielsen posted a 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 comeback win against Goldman.
Over on court 1, Bagshaw put up a fight but was unable to overcome No. 67 Kobuch as the Rainbow Wahine picked up UH's only point of the day with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory.
San Diego State will return to the courts next week when it travels to 36th-ranked UC Irvine on Wednesday, Feb. 27, for a 1:30 p.m. PT match. The Aztecs will continue their road swing on Sunday, March 2, with a 9 a.m. PT dual match at No. 52 University of Arizona.
