San Diego State freshman Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) continued his stellar play on Thursday, carding a 4-under-par 68 to pace the Aztec men's golf team during the second round of the John Burns Intercollegiate in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Carlsson finished the day with a combined score of 10-under 134 to maintain a share of the lead in the individual standings with California's Stephen Hale.
As a team, SDSU slipped to fifth place at the 6,917-yard, par-72 Leilehua Golf Course after shooting a 6-under 282 for a two-round total of 16-under 560. Auburn (-25) posted a 15-under 273 over the second 18 holes to open up a three-stroke lead over UNLV (-22), followed by Texas A&M (-21) and SMU (-20).
After leading the Scarlet and Black with a 66 on Wednesday, Carlsson recorded his second consecutive round in the 60s, a feat he has accomplished just once before as a collegian. Fellow classmate Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) also kept the momentum going on Thursday, following up an opening-round 70 with a 3-under 69 to climb four spots into a tie for 14th place, just five strokes behind the leaders.
Senior Aaron Goldberg was not as fortunate, however, as the Encinitas, Calif., native tumbled into a tie for the 30th spot after firing an even-par 72 for a combined 3-under 141. Despite matching his opening-round 73 over the second 18 holes, junior David Palm (Landvetter, Sweden) also experienced a drop on the leaderboard, falling 10 spots into a tie for 66th at 2-over 146. Senior Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) notched a 73 as well on Thursday to climb into a tie for 88th at 6-over 150.
The final 18 holes of the John Burns Intercollegiate will be contested on Friday beginning at 8 a.m. HST with another shotgun start.
