SAN DIEGO -

SDSU 9, Indiana 0

Senior Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and freshman Brooke Petty (San Diego, Calif.) combined for a one-hitter to lead the San Diego State softball team to a 9-0 victory over Indiana Friday night in the first day of the 18th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs improved to 5-1 with the win, while the Hoosiers dropped to 0-2.

Ross (2-1), a two-time all-Mountain West Conference selection, threw five scoreless innings to pick up her second victory of the season. She allowed just one hit, an infield single that bounced off the glove of a lunging Christine Kulick (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) at third base, while striking out two before giving way to Petty. Petty pitched two perfect innings of relief to go along with two strikeouts to close out the game.

On the offensive side of the ball, SDSU drew a season-high 12 walks and banged out nine hits in the victory. Junior Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) continued her hot start to the season, reaching base in all five of her plate appearances. McCorkle, a 2006 Co-Big East Freshman of the Year and all-Big East performer while at Syracuse (2006-07), went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two walks. She also added an RBI and her first stolen base of the season.

Senior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) had two hits, two runs and an RBI, while senior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) contributed two hits and a walk. Sophomore Brittany Knudsen (San Diego, Calif./Escondido HS), redshirt junior Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.), freshman Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) and freshman Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) each added an RBI.

San Diego State got runs in each of the first four innings, beginning with McCorkle scoring from third on a passed ball in the first. The Aztecs came through for three more in the second on singles by McCorkle and Wells, and a sacrifice bunt by Knudsen. A Camello groundout scored sophomore Katy Erickson (Tustin, Calif.) in the third, while bases loaded walks by Sidoti and Wisneski gave SDSU its sixth and seventh runs.

San Diego State closed out the scoring with two runs in the seventh thanks to some hustle and a bit of luck. After a one-out single by McCorkle, Wells lined a shot into left field that bounced past the Hoosier left fielder and off the wall. McCorkle and Wells, who have a combined 44 collegiate stolen bases, raced around the bags until they touched home plate for the final two runs of the game.

The Aztecs continue play in the Campbell/Cartier with two games on Saturday. SDSU, which will be wearing pink visors to help raise breast cancer awareness for "Think Pink" week, will play Tulsa at 4:30 p.m. and Fresno State at 7 p.m.
