WOODLAND, Calif. - Junior utility Anna Gonzales (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) was named the co-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mikasa Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Gonzales scored 14 goals last week to lead the Aztecs to a 5-0 start and their first-ever UCSD Triton Invitational championship.
On Thursday, Gonzales had two goals, while adding three assists and a steal, to lead the Scarlet and Black to its seventh consecutive opening-day victory with an 11-8 triumph over No. 10 Hartwick College.
At the Triton Invitational, Gonzales notched a team-high 12 goals while shooting at an impressive .545 (12-for-22) clip. On Saturday, Gonzales opened the tournament with three goals and three steals in a 13-6 rout of Maryland. She then went on to rack up a season-high five tallies to lift the Aztecs to an 11-6 victory over 16th-ranked Cal State Northridge.
In the championship game, SDSU trailed 5-2 at the half, but Gonzales scored two of her game-high four goals in the third quarter to spark a five-goal outburst that led to the Aztecs' 10-9 comeback victory over No. 12 Loyola Marymount.
This marks the first career weekly award for Gonzales, who shares the honors with UCLA's Katie Rulon (San Diego, Calif./University HS).
San Diego State will look to continue its perfect start to the season this weekend as the Aztecs will compete in the Princeton Invitational, Feb. 16-17, at DeNunzio Pool. The Scarlet and Black will open the two-day tournament with three games on Saturday, taking on Michigan at 10:50 a.m. ET and Bucknell at 3:30 p.m. ET, before concluding the day with an 8:10 p.m. ET showdown with host Princeton.
