TUCSON, Ariz. - San Diego State's Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) finds himself in a five-way tie for second place on the individual leaderboard after the first day of competition at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz. Darkness suspended play on Monday at the 6,793-yard, par-71 Arizona National Golf Club with the final three holes of the second round scheduled to be completed Tuesday morning. SDSU is currently tied for sixth in the team standings with California at 8-over-par, 23 strokes behind first-place Tennessee (-15).
Goldberg was impressive in collegiate golf's first event of the spring season, draining five birdies over the first 18 holes round en route to a 4-under 67. The Aztec senior then added two more circles to his scorecard in the afternoon session, offsetting a bogey on the par-5 11th hole. With his effort, Goldberg now sits at 5-under with four other golfers, just two shots behind first-place Kevin Chappell of UCLA.
Freshman Matt Hoffenberg was able to overcome five bogeys with five birdies of his own, finishing the day at even-par. The Simi Valley, Calif., native carded an opening-round 71 and remains seven shots in back of the leader.
Meanwhile, senior Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) rallied from a 77 in the first round by maintaining a 1-under pace during the afternoon to finish at 5-over for the day. Completing the first-round scoring for SDSU was freshman Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), who fired a 4-over 75 in the morning, but lost ground the rest of the way and fell to 8-over.
The PING Arizona Intercollegiate is slated to resume on Tuesday at 8 a.m. MST with the conclusion of the second round, followed by final round action.
