SAN DIEGO - The 48th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team opened the 2008 dual-match campaign with a doubleheader sweep, as the Aztecs defeated UC Riverside, 6-1, before downing Cal State Fullerton, 7-0. SDSU has now won 12-straight season openers and has started the season with a 2-0 record for the fifth year in a row.

The Aztecs dominated early against UC Riverside, winning all three doubles matches. First off the court was Eliska Krausova and Holly Bagshaw, who cruised by the Highlanders' Erynne Oki and Donna McCullough, 8-2. Kathryn Kitts and Sisse Nielsen then defeated Roxanne Plata and Alex Khoury, 8-4, before Ozge Atalay and Olivia Colman completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory over Nadia Sakhakorn and Yasaman Sakhakorn.

Colman kicked off singles action by overpowering Khoury 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 position. Over on court No. 5, Nielsen took care of Plata in straight sets (6-1, 6-3), before Esther Cadua clinched the victory for the Aztecs with a 6-0, 6-1 demolition of Nadia Sakhakorn at the No. 3 spot. Rounding out the winners were Bagshaw and Milana Yusupov.

Due to a rain threat in the afternoon, SDSU started its match against Cal State Fullerton with singles play, but the change didn't break the Aztecs' momentum as they won every match in straight sets. Nielsen was first off the court after sweeping Breanna Stowell, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 6 position. Cadua, Bagshaw and Yusupov followed with their second wins of the day, while Krausova and Trunk picked up their first victories.

In doubles play, Nielsen and Kitts continued to work well together, defeating Breanna Stowell and Erin Weisener, 8-1. Atalay and Colman dropped an 8-6 decision to Jerusha Cruz and Brandy Andrews at the No. 3 spot, but Cadua and Trunk were able to clinch the doubles point as they finished off Shelly Injejikian and Karina Akhmedova, 8-5.

With the wins, SDSU improves its all-time record against the Titans (1-2) to a perfect 22-0, and is 4-0 against the Highlanders (0-1).

The Aztecs will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 1 when they travel to Seattle, Wash., for a 9 a.m. match against Gonzaga. SDSU will then square off with Washington at noon on Saturday.
