INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The San Diego State men's tennis team capped off a successful weekend as the tandem of Achim Ceban and Bartosz Golas captured the championship doubles crown on Sunday morning during the final day of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Later in the afternoon, the Aztecs remained at the venue to open their 2008 dual-match season against UC Riverside, winning the neutral-site match in dominating fashion by a 7-0 count.
Ceban and Golas secured the NCTC doubles title with a hard-fought victory over Jeremy Drean and Michael Look of No. 9 UCLA, 8-6. However, Ceban was unable to complete an SDSU sweep as the Moscow, Russia, native succumbed in straight sets to Rice's Bruno Rosa, 6-4, 6-3, in the singles finale.
The Aztecs, ranked No. 50 in the initial collegiate poll of 2008, went back to work in their season opener against the Highlanders, dropping just one match en route to the shutout. After grabbing the doubles point, Golas gave the Scarlet and Black a 2-0 cushion with a 6-1, 6-2, triumph over UCR's Joe Cartledge at the No. 1 position. Juan Gomez followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jack Tadevosian on the No. 4 court, while Matan Shitrit provided the clinching point in the second spot, dispatching John Park, 6-2, 6-2.
SDSU also received victories from Matthew Tosches, Andre Feliz and Tim Schulz van Endert to give the Aztecs and head coach Gene Carswell their third-straight opening-day win.
San Diego State returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 29, when it heads north to Los Angeles to face sixth-ranked USC. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
