COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sophomores Jessica Morrill and Caitlin Atkinson were named the Mountain West Conference women's swimmer and diver of the week, respectively, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. This marks the first time that the Aztecs have swept the weekly honors since the inception of the MWC in 1999-00.
Morrill and Atkinson led SDSU to its first-ever win over TCU (169-129), in addition to a 167-63 victory over Air Force in its conference double dual meet last weekend in San Diego. Morrill garners her first weekly award, while it is Atkinson's second time earning such an honor.
Morrill, a Rio Vista, Calif., native, was the Aztecs' only double winner of the day as she was victorious in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Her times in the 100 breast (1:07.43) and the 200 breast (2:22.97) were both season bests. Morrill also swam the second leg of SDSU's "B" squad that won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:51.72. Morrill is the first Aztec to be named the MWC swimmer of the week since the 2004 campaign.
Atkinson, who hails from Laguna Niguel, Calif., won the one-meter diving event, while finishing second in the three-meter dive. She captured the one-meter board with a season best and NCAA Zone E Diving Regional qualifying score of 269.10. Atkinson also recorded a season best point total of 261.60 in the three-meter event.
San Diego State returns to action when it heads to Provo, Utah, on Saturday, Jan. 12, for a MWC dual meet against BYU at 1 p.m. MT.
