SAN DIEGO - San Diego State crew head coach Jennifer Zebroski announced Tuesday the hiring of Katie Heisinger as an assistant coach at SDSU. Heisinger returns to The Mesa after graduating in August with a bachelor's degree in international business. She will coach the novice and walk-on rowers while assisting with all aspects of recruiting.

"I'm thrilled with the addition of Katie to our staff," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "Being a former Aztec, she understands our athletic department, our program and is familiar with the coaching staff and student-athletes. Her success on and out of the water will inspire the athletes and help the growth of our program."

A three-year letterwinner, Heisinger entered the program as a walk-on freshman and worked herself up to the varsity boat where she helped the boat to many impressive performances.

As a freshman in 2004, Heisinger led the novice eight boat to wins at the San Diego Fall Classic, Parker Cup Regatta, San Diego City Championships and the WIRA Conference Championships. For her efforts, she was named the team's most valuable novice.

After her novice season, Heisinger made an easy transition into the varsity eight boat, helping the Aztecs to a fifth-place showing out of 50 boats at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass. Heisinger also was on the winning varsity eight boats at the San Diego Fall Classic, Parker Cup Regatta, San Diego City Championships and California Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic throughout her collegiate career.

At the end of the 2005 season, Heisinger received the team's Stryker Award, given to the Aztec with the most tenacity and spirit.

Out of the water, Heisinger excelled in the classroom and received several scholar-athlete honors before graduating in August. Prior to graduation, Heisinger interned with a non-profit organization in Barcelona, Spain.

The Aztec rowers kick off their spring season with a dual meet against USC on Feb. 23, 2008, at Mission Bay.
