SAN DIEGO - San Diego State freshman Paris Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Conference Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Johnson led the Aztecs to a 1-1 record at the four-team San Diego Surf `N Slam this past weekend, including a 77-72 victory over Western Michigan on Sunday at Cox Arena. This is the first career weekly award for Johnson and first by an Aztec this season.
Johnson averaged 20 points in the team's games with Quinnipiac and Western Michigan, scoring 15 versus the Bobcats and 25 against the Broncos. She also averaged six rebounds per outing and chipped in four blocks, two steals and an 82.4 free-throw percentage to earn a spot on the six-player all-tournament squad.
For the year, Johnson leads San Diego State in both scoring (14.6 ppg.) and rebounding (6.7 rpg.) to rank seventh and ninth respectively in the MWC. She is also first in the conference in blocked shots (1.75/g).
Johnson becomes the seventh SDSU player in the league's nine-year history to be named player of the week.
SDSU, which finished non-conference action with a 9-3 record, travels to TCU on Wed., Jan. 9, to open Mountain West Conference play. The Aztecs and Lady Frogs will face off at 6:30 p.m. CT at TCU's Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
