The San Diego State women's basketball team celebrated Girls and Women In Sports Day in conjunction with its game this past Sunday with Cal State Fullerton at Cox Arena.
Almost 2,400 fans, an arena record, turned out for the contest, which saw the Aztecs beat the Titans, 76-45.
SDSU teamed up with the San Diego County Office of Education to help promote participation in and awareness of sports. Fans were able to meet and greet student-athletes from each of the school's 11 women's athletic programs and participated in interactive games and got a chance to win prizes.
"I enjoyed seeing and interacting with kids from all different ages and backgrounds and watching their faces light up at each station," said Aztec women's soccer player Heather Vandevanter.
At halftime, guest speakers included Dr. Randolph E. Ward, the San Diego Superintendent of Schools, and San Diego Fire Chief and SDSU alum Tracy Jarman.
Following its contest with the Titans, the Aztec women's basketball team was on hand to sign autographs.
"It was fun and I thought it was great for girls to see they can play college sports." said SDSU water polo player Hannah Klein.
