SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's golf head coach Ryan Donovan announced the signing Thursday of prep standout Evan Emerick (Oceanside, Calif.) to a National Letter of Intent. Emerick, a senior at Carlsbad High School, will begin classes on Montezuma Mesa next September and will be eligible to compete for the Aztecs beginning with the 2008-09 season.
"We very excited about the addition of Evan to our program," Donovan said. "He is an extremely talented player who will have the chance to make an immediate impact here at San Diego State. I am really looking forward to coaching Evan in the coming years."
In 2006, Emerick won the CIF San Diego Section individual title at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club and was named Player of the Year on the All-CIF San Diego team. He later earned a spot in the state championships after shooting a 3-under-par 69 to finish in a tie for third at the CIF Southern California Championship in Murrieta.
In addition to his high school success, Emerick has also excelled in junior competition. He has six top-10 finishes to his credit in 11 American Junior Golf Association tournaments over the past three years, including a third-place tie at the 2005 Nike Golf Junior at Marshallia Ranch in Lompoc. That same year, Emerick also placed near the top of the leaderboard in a trio of local events, the Paul Benoit Memorial Championship (T-4th), the Craig Stadler Junior (T-4th) and the Phil Mickelson Junior Players Championship (T-5th).
San Diego State returns to action next month when it competes in the PING Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan 28-29, at the Arizona National Golf Club, in Tucson, Ariz.
