SAN DIEGO - San Diego State has named David Velasquez its men's basketball director of player development, the school announced Wednesday. The Aztecs' former head manager and scholarship player takes over player development duties immediately after filling the role on an interim basis following the naming of Matt Soria as the program's director of operations.
"We are very pleased with the return of David Velasquez," SDSU head coach Steve Fisher said. "David was a student manager and scholarship player and he returns from the University of the Pacific. He will be our video coordinator and assist in many great ways and we're really happy he is back."
As director of player development, Velasquez will assist in video breakdown, film exchange, travel, community service and will handle many of the day-to-day office duties.
"I am excited to be back in the Aztec family," Velasquez said. "I look forward to continue working under Coach Fisher and his staff. I am more than grateful to Coach Fisher for giving me this opportunity to come back to San Diego State."
Prior to being named director of player development, Velasquez was a student manager for the 2002-03 season before serving as head manager from 2003-07. During the 2006-07 season, the Sunnyvale, Calif., native was awarded a scholarship in December 2006 and was added to the active roster in January 2007.
As an official playing member of the team, Velasquez played in four games and recorded a steal. He was a member of a team that finished the season with a 22-11 record and advanced to the second round of the postseason NIT.
Following his graduation in May 2007, Velasquez was hired at Pacific in May 2007. As the Tigers' graduate manager, he assisted with UOP's camps, created highlight tapes and coordinated film exchange before returning to his alma mater.
A graduate of San Diego State, Velasquez earned his degree in public administration in May 2007.
