A number of San Diego State student-athletes recently got a jumpstart to the holiday season when they participated in two community service projects. On Dec. 3, the athletes helped out needy families by getting involved with the YMCA Family Adoption program and a day later participated in the Junior Seau Foundation-Shop with a Jock. The community service projects saw representatives from all 18 SDSU athletic teams.

"The student-athletes have so much fun with the Family Adoption and Shop with a Jock each year," assistant director of academics Bre White said. "The demand to participate in these events is so high I have to turn some away. They have the best time."

With the YMCA Family Adoption program, the athletes collect money from teammates to be used toward gifts, such as clothes, linens and blankets, for underprivileged families identified by the East County YMCA. This year, the Aztec student-athletes raised over $2,700.

With the Junior Seau Foundation-Shop with a Jock program, the Aztecs teamed up with local sports organizations to shop with needy children. Of the 200 participants, 105 were SDSU student-athletes, by far the largest contingency of volunteers which included such groups as the San Diego Chargers and University of San Diego.
