SAN DIEGO - TCU took advantage of a slow start by San Diego State as it recorded a 3-1 (30-16, 30-28, 27-30, 30-23) victory over the Aztecs Friday evening in Peterson Gym. The loss was the seventh in the last eight outings for SDSU as it saw its record fall 12-12 overall and 4-9 in the Mountain West Conference. TCU, meanwhile, improved to 21-11 (8-6 MWC),
San Diego State had three players finish the evening in double figures in kills led by 15 from senior Lindsey Mahan, who also notched four blocks and three digs. Fellow senior Sydney De Turk tallied 12 kills and led all players with seven total blocks. Freshman Lauren Salisbury recorded 10 kills and also chipped in with five blocks.
TCU's LeMeita Smith was the Horned Frogs' primary offensive threat as she finished with a match-high 16 kills while teammates Kourtney Edwards and Lauren Otto had 14 and 11 respectively. Otto completed a double-double by adding a dozen digs to her final stat line.
In the first game, TCU broke an early 1-1 tie by winning 14 of the next 17 points to take a 15-3 lead. Devon Kirk and Lauren Otto had five kills apiece in the contest for the Horned Frogs, who hit .444 while holding SDSU to a .054 hitting percentage. Mahan led the Aztecs with three of the team's 10 kills.
Game two saw San Diego State take the lead at 7-6 and hold the advantage until the Horned Frogs knotted the score at 25-all. TCU won the next two points on a kill by Edwards and an Aztec attack error. After trading two points, the visitors closed out the match on a kill by Smith, who finished the game with seven kills. Mahan and Sydney De Turk had four kills each for SDSU.
The third game went back and forth until SDSU took the lead for good at 17-16. A service ace by Aime Cordeiro and a kill by Mahan opened up a three-point advantage for SDSU, but the visitor came back to within a point at 21-20. However, San Diego State regained its three-point lead at 27-24 before going on the three-point win. TCU's Kourtney Edwards led all layers with five kills in the contest with Mahan and Evans sharing the honors for SDSU with three each.
In game four, TCU took the lead for good at 11-10 and maintained a three-point advantage over the middle portion of the contest. The Horned Frogs won going away as they tallied five of the game's final six points to nail down the match victory. Smith again led both teams in kills with six while Mahan and De Turk paced the Aztecs with five apiece.
San Diego State will close out its 2007 home season when it hosts New Mexico on Saturday Nov. 19, at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym. Prior to that match, the Aztecs will recognize five seniors who will be making their final home appearance for the Red and Black.
