SAN DIEGO - Six players scored in double-figures, including all five starters, as the San Diego State women's basketball team defeated Love and Basketball 85-67 in exhibition game action Thursday at Cox Arena. The Aztecs avenged last year's two-point loss to Love and Basketball, a squad of former college players.
"Everyone did something to contribute tonight," SDSU head coach Beth Burns said. "Getting 20 offensive boards is important for this team in order for us to be successful."
San Diego State was led by sophomore point guard Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.), who fell just one rebound short of a triple double with a team-best 18 points, 11 assists and nine boards. Junior Shannon Clay (Inglewood, Calif.) tallied a double-double off the bench against her former junior college coach's team with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Four other players were in double-figures including senior Shanna Demus (12 points) and freshmen Allison Duffy (11 points) and Paris Johnson (13 points).
The Aztecs shot 44.7 percent from the floor and owned a plus-16 margin in the rebounding column. Freshman Coco Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) contributed nine rebounds, with six of those coming on the offensive glass.
SDSU got out to a quick start scoring seven straight points to take the early lead, which it would never relinquish. The Aztecs led by as many as 13 points, before finishing the final three minutes of the first half on an 11-2 run for a 47-29 advantage at the break.
Love and Basketball was able to cut its deficit to as few as 14 points early in the second half and was later behind by 15 with 9:18 remaining, but was never able to recover, as the Aztecs claimed the 85-67 victory.
Love and Basketball had three players in double-figure points, including Tanisha Johnson and Viviane Nascimento, who both tallied 14 apiece.
San Diego State officially opens its season on the road for the third time in the last four seasons, when the Aztecs face Nevada on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nev. Live audio, video and stats will be available the school's official website, www.goaztecs.com.
