EL PASO, Texas - With a three-round score of 12-under 201, senior Aaron Goldberg of the San Diego State men's golf team finished in second place on Tuesday at the 33rd Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas.
The Encinitas, Calif., native had his best tournament of the fall season stringing together three straight rounds in the 60's (66, 67, 68) to finish three strokes behind Wake Forest's Webb Simpson who shot a 15-under 198 at the 6,837-yard, par-71 El Paso Country Club.
Goldberg, who was atop the leaderboard heading in to the final round, had a one-stroke lead over Simpson entering the back nine at 11-under.
Simpson and Goldberg swapped birdies on holes No. 10 and No. 11 before Simpson tied the Aztec All-American on No. 12. Simpson was able to pull away for the win with birdies on 15, 16 and 17.
The All-American Golf Classic has been renowned for having competitors who have gone on to have successful professional careers on the PGA Tour. Past tournament champions include David Duval (1991), Davis Love III (1984) and Tiger Woods (1995). The tournament is hosted annually by the Sun Bowl Association.
Goldberg and his Aztec teammates will return to the links for their first tournament of the spring season on Jan. 28 when they compete at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
