SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's water polo head coach Carin Crawford announced the signing Tuesday of three prep standouts to National Letters of Intent. Kelly Campoli (Lake Forest, Calif.), Meghann Pedersen (Los Gatos, Calif.), and Meaghan Poland (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) will join the Aztecs in 2008-09.
"We are excited to have three quality student-athletes join our water polo program at SDSU," said Crawford. "They each bring a diverse set of skill and talent to our program and we are delighted they have chosen to become part of our Aztec water polo family."
Campoli, a goalkeeper, is currently a senior at El Toro High School, where she holds the school record for most career saves with 738. Last year, Campoli notched 282 stops, leading the Chargers to an appearance in the CIF quarterfinals. For her efforts, Campoli earned first-team all-league and first-team all-CIF honors. The 2006 South Coast League MVP also has four years of experience at the club level with the SET water polo club.
"Kelly is a proven competitor at the highest level of high school and club competition, and brings great determination and talent to the goalie position," Crawford said. "As a goalie for SET water polo club, Kelly earned big-game experience during the last two seasons that will pay big dividends for her in the future."
Pedersen, a senior 2-meter player at Los Gatos High School, recently led the Wildcats to the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section playoffs. A second-team all-CCS selection, Pedersen also has two years of experience at the club level with the High Point water polo club team.
"Meghann is a talented 2-meter player who will bring size and strength to the center position, but who is also a formidable threat from the perimeter," said Crawford. "She will prove to be a tough match up defensively, and we will look for Meghann to create many scoring opportunities for our team."
Poland, a utility player, will also bring impressive credentials to The Mesa. Last year, Poland was a first-team all-league and a second-team all-CIF selection, and was named her team's offensive player of the year. Also a standout swimmer, Poland was a member of the Tigers' 200 freestyle relay squad that qualified for the 2006-07 CIF finals.
"Meaghan has great size, speed and athleticism, and is a versatile utility player who will contribute on both sides of the ball at SDSU," said Crawford.
San Diego State will open its 2008 campaign on Feb. 7, when it plays host to Hartwick College. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the Aztec Aquaplex.
