SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team has signed five newcomers to National Letters of Intent, head coach Kathy Van Wyk announced on Thursday. The talented players, who will join SDSU in the fall of 2008, include Roshana Lavery (San Diego/Mission Bay HS), Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif./Pioneer HS), Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS), Ashley Rose (Antioch, Calif./Carondelet HS) and Caitlin Steele (Belmont, Calif./Carlmont HS).

Lavery, who starred at nearby Mission Bay HS, comes to The Mesa as one of the fastest runners in the county. Lavery earned first-team all-Central League honors in 2007 while garnering first-team accolades in soccer as well.

An outfielder with tremendous speed, Lavery will look to continue the long line of successful Aztec slap hitters when she comes to SDSU in August. Lavery played for the San Diego Aztecs 18-Under club team.

Micetich is a four-year letterwinner at Pioneer HS in Woodland, Calif., where she has led the Patriots to three Tri County League titles. Micetich is a remarkable 54-5-1 (.908) over her career with a 0.36 ERA and 841 strikeouts in 407 innings pitched. Last season, Micetich went 18-3 with 311 strikeouts to just 11 walks over 139 innings. At the plate, Micetich was equally as impressive, batting .353 in 24 games.

Micetich, who chose SDSU over Nevada, earned league MVP honors in 2006 and was the defensive MVP in 2007. She was named to the all-Tri County League first team on three occasions and was a Sacramento Bee all-Metro first-team selection after the 2007 campaign. Micetich played for the All American Softball Academy club team out of Tracy, Calif.

Another San Diego County product, Reifschneider comes to Montezuma Mesa with an impressive list of accolades. Reifschneider is a three-time all-Eastern League selection and former Player of the Year. In addition, she has been a two-time second-team all-CIF honoree and the Morse MVP in 2007.

Last season, Reifschneider batted .418 with 27 runs scored and 11 stolen bases in 24 games. She will be reunited with former teammate Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario on The Mesa. Last season, Reifschneider played for the San Diego Breakers and now plays for the San Diego Aztecs club team.

Steele, a two-time all-Peninsula Bay League performer, has led Carlmont HS to three consecutive league titles, including a perfect 14-0 record and 30-2-1 overall record in 2007. A catcher and an outfielder, Steele earned first-team all-county honors in 2007 after batting .377 with 17 RBI and 17 runs.

Steele, who picked SDSU over Pacific and Long Beach State, was selected as the Daily Journal Player of the Year in 2007 and won the team's Outstanding Player Award. In addition, Steele has been a member of the San Jose Sting club team since 2003.

Rose comes to America's Finest City with four years of high school experience and 10 seasons of ASA softball. At Carondelet HS, Rose earned first-team all-Bay Valley League honors as a shortstop in 2007 and second-team accolades in 2006.

A team captain in 2006-07 for both the basketball and softball teams, Rose was named the most valuable player for the Cougars in 2007 after earning the coaches award the previous season. In addition, Rose is a scholar-athlete who played for the Sorcerer Gold and now plays with Steele for the San Jose Sting.

The five newcomers will be called upon to replace current seniors Taryin Casillas, Megan McDonald, Christina Ross and Tamani Wells, all who have been starters over their time at SDSU.

The Aztecs kick off their 2008 schedule Feb. 8 at the Cathedral Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., with a game against 2007 NCAA participant Cal Poly.
