FRESNO, Calif. - San Diego State opened up a four-point halftime lead in the second half, stretching its lead to 14 before putting Portland (0-2) away with a 78-64 victory in the fourth game of the World Vision Classic presented by Pape in Fresno, Calif., on Saturday night.
The Aztecs had four players score in double figures, as Kyle Spain led the way with a game- and career-high tying 22 points. Lorrenzo Wade added a season-best 18 points and Tim Shelton had a career-high 12 points and five rebounds.
Kelvin Davis also scored in double figures with a personal-best 10 points.
San Diego State shot the ball well from the floor, connecting on 8 of 16 from long range and the Aztecs shot 71.4 percent from the free throw line.
Portland was led offensively by Sherrard Watson, who came off the bench to score 19 points, including 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Robin Smeulders also came off the bench to score 16 points and Nik Raivo added 10 points in the loss.
Portland shot 41 percent from the field, but shot 21.1 percent (4-19) from long range.
With the win the Aztecs improve to 2-0 and will face 2-0 Fresno State in the championship game of the tournament at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The win also marks the first time SDSU has won its first two games of a season since the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.
