Aztec Rowing to Compete in Lone Fall Competition; Travel to Newport Autumn Rowing Festival This Saturday
The San Diego State rowing team will compete in its lone fall meet of the season when it travels to Newport Harbor for the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival this weekend. The Aztecs, who were supposed to travel to the prestigious Head of American a week ago and participate in the San Diego Row For the Cure, had to cancel last weekend's activities because of the San Diego wildfires and poor air quality.

Sunday's competition will draw some of the top teams of the entire West Coast, including the Aztecs, Arizona State, Stanford, UCLA and USC.

SDSU will row six boats in three different races at this year's NARC. The Aztecs will have two boats competing in the Women's Open Eight, which will begin at 8:15 a.m. At 9:30 a.m., two SDSU boats will race in the Frosh/Novice Eight competition. The Women's Eight race will conclude the day with a 10 a.m. start and will feature two Aztec boats.

A Look Back at the 2006 Newport Autumn Rowing Festival
The San Diego State Varsity Eight "A" boat took first of 21 boats to lead the Aztec rowing team at the Newport Autumn Racing Festival in Newport Beach, Calif., on Nov. 12, 2006. It was the second consecutive race the Varsity Eight "A" boat has won after taking first in the San Diego Fall Classic the week before.

The Varsity Eight "A" boat beat out 21 other boats with a time of 16 minutes, 46 seconds over the 2.7-mile race, eight seconds ahead of second-place Sacramento State "A" (16:54).

The "B" boat and "C" boat had top seven performances as well, finishing sixth (17:23) and seventh (17:27), respectively. All three Aztec boats beat numerous "A" boats from other schools, including Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine and Pacific.

The Varsity Four boats and Novice Eight boats also had good days for San Diego State.

In the Varsity Four race, which featured 21 boats, the Aztecs placed second and fourth. The Varsity Four "A" boat was second with a time of 18:32, while the "B" boat was 10 seconds behind in fourth at 18:42.

In the Novice race, the SDSU "A" boat finished fifth of 20 boats with a time of 18:23. The "B" boat followed in sixth place at 18:59, while the "C" boat took 11th in the race in 19:55, beating Arizona, Santa Clara and UC Irvine's top boats.
