SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team completed a successful first day at the second installment of the SDSU Fall Classic on Friday. Four individuals advanced in the main draw of their singles flights, while two of three Aztec tandems recorded a win in doubles action.

In Flight 1 singles, freshman Julia Trunk and junior Holly Bagshaw each picked up a win to move on to the semifinals in the field of eight. Trunk recorded a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Chelsea Orr of Oklahoma, while Holly Bagshaw defeated USD's Samantha Mouly, 7-5, 15-30 ret. Meanwhile, senior Eliska Krausova was unable to overcome Venise Chan of Washington, as she fell in straight sets.

Over in Flight 2, the only draw with a field of 16, junior Esther Cadua picked up two wins to advance to the semifinals. Cadua defeated UC Irvine's Jessica Broadfoot, 6-4, 6-3, before disposing of Oklahoma's Maria Kakashnikova, 7-6(4), 6-3. Senior Sisse Nielsen slipped past Erin Young of Saint Mary's, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round, but was unable to advance to the semifinals, falling to Christi Baxley of Oklahoma in three sets. Junior Milana Yusupov dropped her first match of the day, but rebounded to record a straight-set (6-3, 6-4) victory over Camelia Todorova of Arizona in the consolation round.

Rounding out an impressive day for the Aztecs was freshman Olivia Colman, who advanced in Flight 4 with a 6-1, 6-4, victory over UC Irvine's Brooke Bartlett.

In doubles action, two of three Aztec duos won their first round matches on Friday morning. In Flight 1, Bagshaw and Krausova cruised by Arizona's Jane Huh and Camelia Todorova, 8-3, while Nielsen and Cadua were not as fortunate, suffering an 8-3 loss at the hands of Joyce Ardies and Tara Simpson of Washington. In Flight 2, Colman and Atalay earned a hard-fought win over Brooke Bartlett and Ali Borowicz of UC Irvine, 9-8 (5).

The SDSU Fall Classic will continue on Saturday, with doubles play getting underway at 9 a.m., and singles matches to follow.
