FAIRFAX, Calif. - Senior All-American Aaron Goldberg and freshman Johan Carlsson each carded a score of 6-under 136 through two rounds to lead the San Diego State men's golf team on Monday at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif. The five-member lineup has produced at the Par-71, 6,686 yard Meadow Club helping the Aztecs to rest in seventh place after posting a score of 552 (-16) heading into the final round of action.
Scores were high throughout the first two rounds as No. 36 Washington sits atop the leaderboard with a score of 541 (-27). Daryl Fathauer of Louisville leads the 81-person field after carding a score of 14-under 128 through 36 holes.
Goldberg and Carlsson each found success in the first round registering a score of 70 (-1). The duo followed that up by bettering their initial efforts with identical scores of 66 in the second round of 18. The round of 66 marked the season best for each Aztec.
Freshman Matt Hoffenberg continued his solid play during the fall by carding back-to-back rounds of 70, placing him in a tie for 31st with four other golfers. The Simi Valley, Calif., native's scores marked his lowest of the season.
One stroke back of Hoffenberg with a score of 1-under 141 in a tie for 36th is junior David Palm. The native of Landvetter, Sweden, scored his best round of the season during the opening 18 holes with a 71. Palm bettered that score in the afternoon by shooting a 70.
Rounding out the scores for SDSU was senior Jamie Puterbaugh. The Carlsbad, Calif., native struggled in the first round shooting a 73 (+2), but followed that up with a 2-under 69 in the second round. Puterbaugh sits in a tie 41st place.
The Aztecs return to the links looking to improve their scores and move up the leaderboard on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
