LA JOLLA, Calif. - The San Diego State cross country `B' team made the short trip north to compete in the Triton Classic on the campus of UC San Diego Saturday morning. The Aztecs finished the 6,000-meter course in eighth place after earning 236 points.

"I am very pleased with our performance today," said assistant coach Jennifer Nanista. "We ran aggressively, ran well as a pack and with a group of mostly freshman runners, our future is bright."

SDSU, which had five runners finish within 57 seconds of each other, was led by freshman Michelle Martinez, who came in 50th place after crossing the finish line in 24 minutes, 49 seconds. Martinez, like the majority of her teammates, was competing in her first 6K of her collegiate career.

Elizabeth Leonard was not far behind Martinez as she completed the race in 24:56 and was followed closely by Sara Cunningham who clocked in with a time of 25:08.

Sara Beyers, coming off a personal record performance at the UC Riverside Invitational, navigated the course in 25:38 with Lindsay Barajas checking in eight seconds later at 25:46.

San Diego State returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 13, when it travels to northern California for the Santa Clara Invitational. Race time is set for 9:45 a.m. PT in Sunnyvale, Calif.
