KAPOLEI, Hawaii - In a field with seven schools ranked in the top 50, the San Diego State women's golf team is in 18th place after the first round of the Kent Youel Invitational Tuesday in Kapolei, Hawaii. The Aztecs recorded a 35-over 323 in the first 18 holes at the par-72 6,140-yard Kapolei Golf Course. The field will play the second round later in the day with an estimated finish time around 6 p.m. HT.
Aztec freshmen Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Kaitlien Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii) are tied for the team lead after both carding 79s, which tie them for 46th overall on the individual leader board. Junior Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) is three strokes behind the pair, after posting a 41 on both the front and back nine for a first round score of 82.
SDSU freshman Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.), who was the team's top finisher at the Aztec Fall Classic two weeks ago, is tied for 84th with an 83. Junior Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.) rounded out the starting five with a first-round 89.
Top-ranked UCLA holds a slight one stroke lead over No. 4 USC with a 5-over 293. Individually, Oregon State's Jessi Gebhardt was one of two golfers in the 102-player field to finish under par with a 3-under 69. Gebhardt holds a two-stroke advantage over second place Belen Mozo of USC, who fired a 1-under 71.
San Diego State will play its final 18 holes of its 2007 fall schedule Wednesday with the third and final round, beginning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. HT.
