SALT LAKE CITY - The San Diego State women's soccer team scored a late goal to tie the game, but it wasn't enough as Utah sophomore Kelly Isleib scored with just under two minutes left on the clock to secure the Utes' 2-1 victory over the Aztecs on Sunday in Salt Lake City.
The victory improves Utah's Mountain West Conference record to 3-1-2, 11-3-4 overall. With the loss, SDSU falls to 3-2-1 MWC, 8-7-3 overall.
The two teams held each other scoreless in the first half with Utah holding the 9-2 edge on shots.
In the second half, SDSU came out and appeared to have gotten on the board first when sophomore Heather Vandevanter beat Utah goalkeeper Lynzee Lee for a score, but Lee appealed for a hand ball call on Vandevanter that the referees awarded after conferencing.
The Utes would take advantage of the call and score first when the conference's leading goal scorer Adele Letro posted her 17th goal of the year off a pass from Isleib in the 68th minute. The assist for Isleib was her 12th which leads the MWC.
SDSU tied the contest in the 80th minute when it added an extra attacker that helped force an own goal. As the Aztecs looked to create a scoring chance, Ute freshman Nicole Cardon attempted to clear the ball, but knocked it into the back of her own net.
With the clock ticking towards overtime in the 88th minute, Utah mounted one last scoring charge which resulted in Isleib recording her first goal of the season. The midfielder, who has been so adept at setting up her teammates, took a pass from Letro and shot the ball to the lower left corner past SDSU goalkeeper Aubree Southwick for her second career score.
The Aztecs had one last chance to tie the game in the final minute. With 10 seconds remaining, sophomore Millie Allen placed a corner kick inside the six-yard box, but the team was unable to get a shot off as time expired.
The Scarlet and Black wrap up the regular-season portion of its 2007 schedule and celebrate senior day on Friday against TCU at the SDSU Sports Deck. Kickoff between the Aztecs and Horned Frogs is slated for 3 p.m.
