The San Diego State men's golf team was unable to maintain its first round lead and finished in second place at the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational Tuesday at the par-72, 6,687-yard Willow Glen Course at Sycuan Resort in El Cajon, Calif.
Wichita State shot a four-under 284 (-4) on the final day to rally from six strokes back and claim the team medal. The Shockers were led by senior Ryan Spears who claimed the individual medalist honors on the strength of his tournament low round of 67 on Tuesday. Spears ended with a 1-under 215 for the invitational.
San Diego State struggled to find its rhythm over the course of the event's final 18 holes as the squad shot a 296 for the second straight round to finish with a score of 890 (+26).
The Aztecs' highest finisher was junior David Palm who tied for third after carding a two-under 70 in his final round to finish with a score of 218 (+2).
SDSU's next highest finishers were senior Aaron Goldberg and freshman Johan Carlsson. The duo tied for 11th with a score of 223 (+7).
The Aztecs other player to place in the top-20 was freshman Jerry Porras. The Tijuana, Mexico, native ended his first collegiate golf tournament in a three-way tie for 19th after carding a 225 (+9).
The Sycuan Collegiate Invitational marks the end of the Aztecs' fall slate. SDSU will return to action on January, 28, 2008, at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
