The San Diego State men's golf team battled severe winds on Monday to shoot a two-round score of 594 (+18) and take the lead at the first-ever Sycuan Collegiate Invitational in El Cajon Calif. Freshman Jerry Porras leads nine Aztecs with an even-par score of 144, which places him in a tie for first, at the par-72., 6,687-yard Willow Glen Course.
The Aztecs vaulted to the top of the 17-team leaderboard by shooting a 298 in the first round and followed that score up with a 296 in the second round.
SDSU owns a six stroke lead over Wichita State and an eight stoke advantage on Missouri and UC Riverside.
Playing as an individual, Porras shot a 74 in the first stanza and a two-under 70 in the second round. The Tijuana, Mexico, native is tied for first with UC Riverside's Nick Paez.
Three strokes off the leaders at 147 is Aztec freshman Johan Carlsson. The Gothenberg, Sweden, native shot his team-leading seventh round under par when he recorded a 71 in the second.
Joining the two other Aztecs in the top-six is junior David Palm and senior All-American Aaron Goldberg. Both players carded a four-over par 148. Palm had his best round in the opening 18 by carding a 71. In the second round, Palm struggled shooting a 77. Goldberg was steady firing back-to-back rounds of 74.
The Aztecs complete the final 18 holes of the tournament on Tuesday at 8 a.m. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.com.
