MALIBU, Calif. - Sophomore Michael Beron recorded his first victory of the season, as the San Diego State men's tennis team finished its third day of competition on Friday at the ITA West Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif.
Beron, a native of San Diego, Calif., dropped his main draw contest on Wednesday and rebounded in his first consolation match by beating UC Irvine's Douglas Taylor in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Also competing in consolation action was freshman Matthew Tosches and sophomore Juan Gomez. Tosches, a native of Murrieta, Calif., was upended by Cal Poly's Blake Wardman, 6-3, 6-0. Gomez was eliminated from competition when he was defeated by UCSB's Nigel Barton in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6.
In main draw competition, sophomore Matan Shitrit's run ended when he fell in straight sets to the tournament's No. 1 seed Andre Begemann of Pepperdine. Begemann took the first set, 6-4, and followed in the second set with the 6-2 victory to win the match.
Beron will continue his run through the consolation bracket on Saturday when returns to the courts to face USC's Andrew Piotrowski. The match will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
