MALIBU, Calif. - The San Diego State men's tennis team had a successful opening day at the ITA West Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif., by having four singles players and one doubles tandem advance to the second round of competition on Wednesday.

Recording his second win of the fall was sophomore Achim Ceban. Ceban, who won 21 matches a year ago, advanced after defeating UC Riverside's Hakop Tadevosian in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.

Sophomore Matan Shitrit, competing in his second tournament this fall, recorded his first victory against Arizona's Nathan Cochrane in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5.

Also advancing to the second round was a pair of freshmen who were making their Aztec debuts in Andre Feliz and Tim Schulz van Endert. Feliz beat Hawaii's Spencer Mendoza, 7-5, 6-2, while Schulz van Endert swept Sebastion Ko of UC Riverside, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, the duo of Shitrit and sophomore Juan Gomez outlasted UC Irvine's Alex Sundling and Gautam Vaidyanathan, 9-8, in their opening round contest.

The Aztecs singles players return on Thursday for the round of 64 while Shitrit and Gomez will compete in the round of 32. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
