FORT WORTH, Texas - After finding itself down two games to none, the San Diego State volleyball team mounted a spirited comeback only to see their effort come up just shy as it dropped a five-game heartbreaker at TCU Saturday evening. The Horned Frogs prevailed by scores of 30-28, 30-18, 26-30, 26-30, 15-12 in a contest between the teams that went the distance.
The loss was the third straight for the Aztecs, their longest losing streak of the season, as they dropped to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in the Mountain West Conference. TCU improved to 17-7 while evening its league mark at 4-4.
SDSU senior Lindsey Mahan led all players with 17 kills on the night, one shy of her career high. Teammate Hannah Evans recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 14 kills and 13 digs while freshman Lauren Salisbury chipped in with 12 kills and three blocks.
In addition to that trio, outside hitter Caitlin McMillan came off the bench to contribute 10 kills and 15 digs. Not only was it the first double-double of her Aztec career, she also set career bests in both stats categories.
Elsewhere for SDSU, libero Aime Cordeiro had 28 digs over the five games while setters Leah Lathrop and Kristen Castillo turned in 30 and 25 assists respectively.
Three TCU players finished in double figures in kills led by the duo of Kourtney Edwards and LeMeita Smith with 16 apiece. Irene Hester also had a dozen kills for the Horned Frogs.
After TCU won a close opening game by two points and a one-sided second contest by 12, San Diego State came out after the break and won the next two games by four points each. In the fifth and deciding contest, the Horned Frogs took an early lead at 3-2 and held that advantage until SDSU knotted the score at 9-9.
After trading points, the home side ran off three straight on an Aztec service error, a kill by Smith and a service ace by Nirelle Hampton. The teams again traded points before a kill by Hester ended the match in favor of TCU.
Up next for San Diego State is a trip to Last Vegas where it will take on UNLV on Friday, Oct. 19, at 7:00 p.m. in its only match next week. That contest will be televised live on The Mtn.
