BREMERTON, Wash. - The San Diego State men's golf team struggled on the opening day of the Husky Invitational carding a score of 21-over 597 through 36 holes at the par-72, 7,061-yard Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
The Aztecs sit in a tie for fifth-place heading into the final 18 holes along with California. SDSU rests 16 shots behind tournament leader Oregon State. The Beavers, which shot an even-par 288 in the first round and are five over through 17 holes, had their second round suspended along with Oregon and Washington due to darkness.
Leading the way for San Diego State was freshman Johan Carlsson who is tied for 12th place. The Gothenberg, Sweden, native shot a one-under 71 in the first round after tallying five birdies. Carlsson, who fired a 2-under 214 in his first collegiate tournament on Sept. 14-15, couldn't repeat his opening round performance as he had five bogies on his way to carding a 76 (+4) in the second round.
In his second collegiate tournament, freshman Matt Hoffenberg tallied a six-over 150 (76-74) and sits in a tie for 21st place. Junior David Palm is one of three competitors tied with Hoffenberg after firing back-to-back rounds of 75 (+3). Senior All-American Aaron Goldberg finished day one tied for 25th after shooting a seven-over 151. The Encinitas, Calif., native began the day by shooting a 79 in the first round before rebounding to fire an even-par 72 in the second.
Rounding out the scoring for SDSU was senior Chad Moscovic who carded a 16-over 160 (78-82) and is tied for 48th.
SDSU is the top Mountain West Conference team in the field, with BYU sitting in 10th place (607, +31) and New Mexico two strokes in back of the Cougars in 12th place.
At the top of the individual leader board is Oregon State's James Allenby, who is at six-under par with two holes left in his second round.
The Aztecs will take to the course for their final 18 holes of the Husky Invitational on Tuesday. Tee offs begin at 7:30 a.m.
