SAN DIEGO - San Diego State has named Mark Fisher its new assistant men's basketball coach on Wednesday. The Aztecs' former director of basketball operations takes over coaching duties immediately, following the departure of Gregg Gottlieb in July.
"I am very excited for Mark to move into an assistant coaching position," Steve Fisher said. "As a five-year member of our staff, he is very familiar with everything that surrounds San Diego State University, including our program and student-athletes. It will be a seamless transition for him.
"He has been around basketball all his life and now he moves into on-court coaching and off-campus recruiting."
Mark Fisher, the son of Steve Fisher, previously was San Diego State's director of basketball operations for the last five seasons. During his tenure, Fisher handled many of the day-to-day operations, including scheduling, camps and organizing all aspects of team travel. In addition, Fisher represented the basketball program with the athletic administration.
In his time supervising scheduling, the Aztecs have played high-profile games against the likes of Arizona, California, Iowa State, Providence, Washington and Washington State among others.
"I am honored and excited to officially be on the coaching staff," Mark Fisher said. "I am fortunate to be an assistant on an unbelievable staff at a great university in the best city in America."
In previous years, when San Diego State had two assistant coaches, Fisher officially took over coaching responsibilities and conducted individual workouts and off-campus recruiting. Since Gottlieb left, Fisher has resumed recruiting.
Prior to his arrival on campus in 2002, Fisher worked with the Lincoln High School basketball program in Ann Arbor, Mich., from 1998-2001. While in the prep ranks, Fisher served as the varsity assistant head coach, head junior varsity coach and the head freshman coach. He also served as associate head coach for an Ann Arbor AAU team in the summer of 2001.
Fisher graduated from the University of Michigan in December 2001, with a degree in psychology.
